On Instagram, Lobo Nosara (@lobo.nosara) is a story of conscious consumerism. Its feed is a pristine, curated feed of « sustainably made clothing and home goods, » set against the lush backdrop of its Costa Rican home. The company’s website speaks of « fashion that… looks good for the planet » and proudly touts its membership in « 1% for the Planet, » alongside active partnerships with local charities like the Nosara Food Bank and Costas Verdes.
The brand sells itself as a gateway to global craft, offering $4,020 « Vintage Moroccan Handknotted Rugs » and other artisan goods to a high-end clientele. It has built its identity on a foundation of community, sustainability, and giving back.
But for many of the small workshops and craft cooperatives that produce those very same international goods, that story of community is nothing but a fiction.
Based on dozens of interviews with Moroccan-based artisans, cooperatives, and a review of feedbacks across platforms—uncovers a starkly different reality. Behind the « conscious » façade is a calculated system allegedly designed to extract value from small producers and discard them. Interviews reveal a pattern of non-payment for completed orders, the theft and mass-production of proprietary designs, and contracts that trap artisans in cycles of debt.
This is the story of how Maria Christina Casey’s Lobo Nosara allegedly weaponized the language of sustainability to build an empire at the expense of the very artisans it claims to be championing.
For one rural cooperative in Morocco, the relationship began with deep reservations. The manager, who had previously declined to work with Casey due to what she describes as an « aggressive attitude, » was eventually persuaded to fulfill an order for four large handmade Moroccan rugs.
The financial terms for the four-rug order were immediately predatory. One piece in particular—a custom 10×14-foot hand-knotted rug—exemplifies the deal. According to documents reviewed, Casey insisted on a price of just $775 for it. This figure, the cooperative states, represented « zero profit, » barely covering the raw materials and the weavers’ wages. The artisans agreed to the loss, hoping the order might lead to future, more equitable collaborations.
That same rug is currently listed on the Lobo Nosara website for $4,020.
This 400%+ markup is the core of the grievance. « For a business that claims to support various organizations, that level of hypocrisy is beyond corrupt, » the manager told us.
The $775 price tag was intended to be even lower; Casey initially insisted that express international shipping be included in that cost. The cooperative refused, calling it unreasonable, and Casey eventually relented, agreeing to use her own shipping account.
Once the order was placed, the production process descended into chaos. The cooperative claims Casey provided the « bare minimum information » for the complex, custom pieces. When weavers asked for essential details, she would allegedly brush them off or change the subject, only to later accuse the team of being « unprofessional and slow »—blaming them for delays caused by her own lack of communication and the region’s peak summer heat.
When the rugs were finally finished, a new complaint emerged: they were « too thick. » The cooperative was baffled, stating that Casey had never mentioned a desired pile height at any point before or during the order.
The final stage, shipping, exposed the depths of the dysfunction. After one rug was already in transit, Casey suddenly changed her mind, demanding someone she knew pick up the rugs. When the first rug was out for delivery, shipping records show the recipient—Lobo Nosara—first delayed, then declined the delivery.
Casey immediately messaged the cooperative, calling them « unprofessional, » apparently unaware that the artisans had access to the same tracking updates showing she had refused the package.
But the final blow came after the rug was successfully delivered and received. With the $4,020-valued product in her possession, Maria Christina Casey allegedly filed a dispute with her bank for a full refund of the 4 custom rugs ordered, issuing a chargeback to reclaim the cooperative’s break-even payment for that specific piece.
Maria Christina Casey and Lobo Nosara did not respond to multiple requests for comment on these allegations. The $4,020 rug, symbolic of the brand’s « sustainable » luxury, remains listed on their marketplace. For the weavers in Morocco, however, it represents a net loss—a transaction where their craft, their labor, and their trust were taken, and the only thing they received in return was a bank dispute. While Lobo Nosara publicly champions its 1% contribution to the planet, its business model allegedly demands 100% of the risk from the artisans it claims to support.
